Forest Education Initiative
Forest Education Initiative (FEI) is an organisation dedicated to promoting
understanding and appreciation of the environmental, social and economic
potential of trees, woodlands and forest. FEI's aim is to increase young
people's understanding of the link between trees and the many everyday
products which they provide.
The practical work of FEI is achieved through
local groups, who initiate and deliver various projects such as teaching
packs; a directory of local
sites and facilities; developing woodland settings in school grounds;
hosting INSET events for teachers; theatre productions; Forest Schools
and the Woodland Tour Bus. Education professionals can search for and
download learning resources easily and simply. To encourage feedback
and continuous improvemet site users are able to review and rank existing
resources.
Part of Highwire’s remit was that the FEI site would
not only be attractive and easy to use, it has government NGfL approval,
but that
it would develop and grow as a resource for learning materials. To achieve
this FEI wanted its staff and supporters to be able to contribute to
the site and to be able to. To this end Highwire developed the site as
an extranet with a bespoke content management system that enables uploading
of new resources by FEI staff and local groups.
